Jazz Explosion

Jazz Explosion is a contained blast. Formed in late 2008 of Santa Fe elite freelance musicians Case Tanner, Britt Alexander, Shane Dirk and Russell Scharf, Jazz Explosion was immediately performing in and around the Northern New Mexico. As the group developed and Russell began composing for this unique ensemble the trio instrumentation of trumpet, electric bass, and drum set came to define the sparse and funky texture that has become the characteristic Jazz Explosion sound.

Over time the lineup evolved and in early March 2010 the group did the first recording session for the album “Jazz Explosion!”  This session yielded the tracks Sonny, Led Zeppelin’s Misty Mountain Hop, and the 2011 New Mexico Award winning track for the Jazz category, Overcast.  Throughout 2010 the drum chair in the trio was shared by two of Santa Fe, NM’s finest drummers; Milton Villarrubia III brought his unique style to the sound, and Britt Alexander held down that funky groove.  In November the band put down the second recording session, representing the more open trio lineup, and capturing the remaining 7 tracks for their debut fusion CD.

Following the release of “Jazz Explosion!” in January of 2011 the band received radio play and garnered praise from Jazz and non-Jazz fans alike. In 2012 the core trio of Russell, Case and Britt returned to the studio with new material with a moody, indie fusion direction, bringing on local superstar Justin Bransford on Keyboards! Jazz Explosion’s second album The Hipness was released in 2013. It is a fusion of an underground, “indie” style with the Jazz Explosion sound, creating anthemic passages and darker moods.  It has outsold it’s predecessor and has had very wide praise and success.  Currently Jazz Explosion is preparing for our next album with the addition of a few vocal tracks and highlights with some of our favorite guest artists and friends. Thank you for coming on this extraordinary journey with us through the music!

Russell Scharf

Russell Scharf is a father, trumpeter, vocalist, producer, composer, and performer. Russell is an award winning producer and trumpeter, he currently produces Jazz and Pop music as well as music covering numerous genres, and entertaining material for fun and Youtube as well. Born and raised in Santa Fe, NM, Russell’s love of music and art has been a lifelong passion. He studied Classical Trumpet Performance at Carnegie Mellon University with Anthony Pasquarelli and George Vosburgh. Working for Celebrity Cruise Lines was a wild ride after college, traveling and perfecting the “musician” lifestyle…Russell then found his way back to Santa Fe and quickly found himself immersed in the local music scene. He has since performed with Bobby McFerrin, Bobby Shew, local musical titans Al Hurricane and Tobais Rene, and maintained a freelance schedule highlighted by his own trio Jazz Explosion. He is inspired by music that connects emotionally, from fun dance and funk material, to Jazz vocalists such as Esperanza Spalding and Kurt Elling. Connecting through music and opening ears, hearing people say that they keep his CD’s in the car nonstop or that they love a specific song are the moments that keep it all going. Thank you to all of the music lovers and jazz fans for listening.
